Madrid Archeology Museum

I have chosen to write this blog post about an exhibit in Madrid's archeology museum. The exhibit I chose is from the Iberian culture. The exhibit is all the animal/creature statues that are found outside of graves! I thought this exhibit was so interesting. All of the creatures were a sandy color and about the size of a golden retriever. I was able to learn that they were all made out of limestone! Some of the statues were missing legs or faces making them really look quite ancient. They all were really ancient, all being made in between the 5th and 6th century. Some of the statues also had scratches and marks in them. It makes me wonder what they have endured over their lifetime. Something I found really interesting was that the different creatures had different meanings. For example, the Sphinx was said to protect the deceased on their final journey and the Griffin was known as the protector of tombs.

I think this exhibit is important because it teaches us about history and the culture of the Iberians. We are able to learn about the burial of the people. We are able to learn about the sculptures and why they are in and outside of the tombs. These may not seem like super important reasons but I think they are. Being able to learn about other cultures is a super great thing and helps to make us more well rounded individuals. I also think that knowing history is one of the most important things we can know. History is what tells us who we are, where we came from, what worked, and what didn’t.

I think this exhibit contributes to Madrid's status as a cultural capital. People had to work hard to find this history! They had to put in lots of time, effort, and money. I think this shows that the people of Madrid care about history and the past. They value it and make sure that the public has access to it. These museums allow people to learn about the past which gives them a more well rounded education. I think any cultural capital has to have people who know the history of the place they are living. Knowing and understanding the past helps us to live in the now and be prepared for the future.

  1. Education is a huge part of why Madrid is a cultural capital. It’s the governments way of telling the people that they should want to learn about their country’s past and heritage. This museum is great for that and provides the perfect pathway to more knowledge. Cultural capitals have rich history and the people are given more and more opportunities to learn about its past.

  2. Great post Molly-I love that you mentioned that people worked hard to find this history. It makes it more important to the city that they have unique artifacts. I think museums play a huge part in tourism and the cool things people want to see there!
